The Ten Commandments of Autism Understanding

Thou shall not automatically assume that what the autistic person states must be false due to their autism.

Thou shall not automatically assume that every time something bad happens when an autistic person is present that it is the autistic person’s fault.

Thou shall not conclude that the autistic person is miserable in a certain situation unless he or she has asked the autistic person beforehand.

Thou shall assume that all claims made by autistic people of discomforts in their environment are true in their perception even if they are not necessarily true by yours.

Thou shall not assume that the symptoms and behaviors of one autistic person are the symptoms and behaviors of all autistic people.

Thou shall not assume that what works for one autistic person will work for all autistic people.

Thou shall not attempt to cure a symptom of autism when the symptom can be turned into an asset.

Thou shall not automatically assume that an autistic person has certain abilities simply because of a certain age or gender and can perform those abilities if you ask him to.

Thou shall not kill an autistic person.

Thou shall not steal from an autistic person.
